Some say a Great Spirit dreamed the universe into being.
Versions vary: Yahweh proclaimed: “ Let there be light”
or Purusha enveloped the earth with outstretched hands,
but, I’ll take the dream version, adorned with music.
My dream universe features rhythm and harmony: bone
flutes and tree trunk drums: mimicking birds, invoking
thunder, the rattles of snakes, and the howling of coyotes .
Our monthly dream group of eight gathered yesterday and,
we remade the universe, challenging ourselves to explore
instruments we had not mastered, and calling us through
portals whose entrance visas were rhythm and harmony.
We learned that the solos we are being called to play require
us to first embrace lost parents and ancestors, play unknown
wind instruments, and to remember that music is the shortest
way home. And with this music you are welcome to come
home.
Flutes and lutes, not brick and mortar, are the stuff of creation.
And for this universe, dreaming is the foundation. Explore
your dreams and you will hear the refrain over and over:
You are welcome to come home.
You are welcome to come home.
